Speakers

Cody Trestrail (Brothers in Battle) Keynote Speaker: Make the Grab NOT Excuses!

This keynote will make the case to know our why and use experience, statistics and science to occupy the interior and make the grab, not excuses!

Andy Starnes (Insight Fire Training) Introduction to Tactical Thermal Imaging

Today’s modern fire ground places stringent demands on our firefighters. Firefighters are required to formulate our strategies and tactics at 15 times the speed as we did in the past due to the high heat release rate fuels in structure fires. These fires develop faster and are predominantly ventilation limited fires with heavy, turbulent, black smoke that reduces our visibility. Tactical Thermal Imaging enhances a firefighter’s decision-making skill set by providing thermal data. This data allows firefighters to:

• Quickly locate the location &

severity of the fire

• Locate tough hidden fires via

thermal cues & clues

• Identify the flow path and the fires

direction of travel

• Determine the most efficient

access path & prevent rapid fire

development

• Enhances stream placement by

placing our streams where they

are needed most.

Students will learn how to apply this information by understanding the following concepts:

• Tactical 360

• Identifying Flow Path, Fire

Direction of travel, and Access

points

• Go/No-Go Decision Making

• Enhanced Stream Placement

• Enhanced Search Methodology

Anthony Avillo Fireground Strategies: Strategic Decision Making

This presentation will cover the decisions that need to be made regarding fire scene strategy determination based on the arrival and/or forecasted conditions. Strategy selection considerations, strategy modification cues, and offensive-to-defensive / defensive to offensive strategic transition will be a focus for discussion. Situational fire topics will be discussed and highlighted by case studies and lessons learned from past incidents. Areas of focus will include below grade fires, attached and closely spaced buildings, cockloft fires, exposure issues, and large area buildings. We will further discuss the recognition of when an exterior strategic opportunity presents itself, precipitating a transitional strategy as the initial fireground action. Additional insights into strategies and tactics to make a transitional attack more effective will be covered. Further, additional alarm considerations as well as the importance of standard operating procedures as the foundation of fireground control and the importance of progress reports from all operational areas as the basis of ongoing review/evaluation/revision requirements. A must for the Incident Commander.

Sean Eagen (Buffalo, NY) First Due Tactics For The Urban Truck Boss

This class will cover initial arrival considerations (first-due tactics) for urban-based company officers. The class content will cover assigning resources, managing truck company crews during emergency incidents and debriefing calls and other major events. The instructor will describe methods for capitalizing on various experience levels within the ranks to successfully mitigate incidents and other company-related tasks and activities. Attendees will discuss the importance of preplanning and quick decision-making and explore first-due tactical options for assigning and managing truck company resources. Attendees will be given tools to assist in deploying firefighters with various levels of experience and tools to assist in developing their thought process for first-due tactics for urban-based company officers. The class facilitation will focus on assigning resources and managing crews during emergency incidents. The discussion will describe methods for deploying various experience levels within the ranks to successfully mitigate various incidents.

Frank Leeb (FDNY) Fire Service Conerstones of Success: Training and Teamwork and Why it Matters on Game Day

During this keynote lecture, Chief Leeb will discuss the importance of training and teamwork and share insights and lessons learned on incidents where training and teamwork were essential for successful outcomes. With dedication to predicting, preventing, and preparing for the possible. Chief Leeb emphasizes how passion for the job paired with continual improvement in skills and knowledge are the keys to a winning mindset on the fireground. Are you prepared for the possible? Because on game day, the time to prepare has passed!

Mike Kennedy (Ann Arbor) Responding to a Black Swan Incident

On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at 15:28 hours, the Ann Arbor (MI) Fire Department initially responded to a reported fire alarm that rapidly escalated to an active fire on the third floor of a hospital complex that required a stand-pipe hoseline operation for fire attack. A fire of this scope was thought to be a "black swan incident" given the building being fully suppressed. This was a complex, adaptive incident that reached a 3rd alarm, which is very rare for AAFD. The fire caused significant property damage to the complex’s critical infrastructure and impact to a regional healthcare facility. However, outstanding actions by firefighters combined with planning, training, and equipment upgrades, prevented loss of life and limited damage and impact. The narrative behind the success of this incident starts well before October 12, 2021. This class will explore the year long journey to this incident. It will also present the incident and lessons learned.

Rick Bova (Southfield) THEM vs. US

This presentation highlights the value of putting the citizens that we swore to serve and protect before ourselves. So often times members of the fire service get comfortable in their positions, this can sometimes lead to a decrease in training and preparedness. Our presentation is designed to highlight no getting too comfortable, but the fire of your career may be a few minutes from coming in. We will be covering the fire service placing an "over emphasis" on safety of our members. Firefighting is an inherently dangerous job and we stay safe by realistic training, not such things and "two in/two out". A safe culture is an aggressive training culture. We preach training for high-risk events before they happen. Saving lives involves taking a measurable amount of risk and that is what we have to come to accept. We will be covering how an aggressive fire attack and an aggressive search in coordination is how we achieve positive outcomes. We will go in-depth about targeted searches, split searches, VEIS, fire flows, hoseline positions, etc. All things that go together to create positive outcomes. We are going to cover manpower issues and how the job is forcing us to do more with less and ways we can still be aggressive at fires. We will cover the clean cab concept and how that is a move that is not affective to making quick rescues. We are going to use data from FF Rescue Survey for data support during out presentation, especially times VS survival rates. We will cover how to being the shift being prepared, how to conduct yourself to make yourself ready for the fire of your life. Small things such as checking your SCBA with your gloves and helmet and making a quick rep out of the normal morning check. All of this is done for THEM!

Charles Kassley (Southfield) THEM vs. US

Doug Debest (St. Joseph Twp) Culture In The Firehouse; Are We Fostering a Welcoming Environment?

The presentation will dive into the cognitive areas around the environment we work in, namely the “Firehouse.” Throughout the presentation the class with participate in discussions and be able to share some best practices and outside the box ideas on how to improve our cultures at our own fire departments.

Firefighter always talk about the brotherhood / sisterhood of the fire service, but what does that really mean and how do we are leaders encourage that type of environment with our members. During the presentation, the actions of this type of culture will be discussed and a deep-dive into how we as leaders can facilitate this type of experience for our members.

The Firehouse is a sacred place for many; people say it is full of tradition and pride, but sometimes it is not as welcoming for new members as we think it is as current members. Our perspectives are different as members and we need to realize this and make strides to be open and welcoming to our protentional new members of our department.

Leaders must take the time to say, “Thank you.” A quick “Thank you” can mean so much to our members, as it recognizes their efforts. Member retention is critical, especially within the volunteer fire service. Leadership must ensure that our members feel appreciated and valued, otherwise they will begin to reprioritize their time commitment and dedication to the department.

Finally, the presentation will finish with a discussion around the best practices of how we, as leaders can demonstrate our appreciation for our members. This will include examples of how departments recognize their members for all of their efforts and achievements with the department.

  • Truck Company Operations (LIVE FIRE)

Truck Company Operations (LIVE FIRE) [Sold Out]

The Truck Company’s function at any working fire is to support the Engine Company’s advance and extinguishment as well as perform search for victims. Whether you respond with a single truck, multiple trucks or no truck company the timing of truck company operations is determined more by the fireground itself than by your department’s response model. This track is designed to put the students in the front seat and make the appropriate decisions given the scenario they face. It is important to remember that if you do not have enough people to perform all the functions, then the functions must be prioritized based on the final outcome desired. Students will be given the opportunity to put to test what was learned during skill stations and mini scenarios on the final day under live fire exercises.

    Skills Include:
    - Ladders
    - Forcible Entry
